About this addon
What it does
MidnightMuter V2 is a modern, context-aware sound muting addon for World of Warcraft Retail 12.1, built to give you much finer control over which game sounds are muted, when they are muted, and which important sounds are allowed through.
It has been rebuilt as part of the Midnight Addon Suite, with a completely modern interface, profile support, context automation, Competitive Audio tools, sound discovery, diagnostics, and MidnightShared integration.
MidnightMuter remains fully standalone, but integrates cleanly with the rest of the Midnight suite when available.
Features
Context-Aware Sound Muting
MidnightMuter can automatically apply different sound behavior depending on what you are doing.
Supported contexts include:
- Open World / Solo
- Open World / Group
- Rested Areas
- Dungeons
- Mythic+
- Raids
- Battlegrounds
- Arenas
- Scenarios / Delves
Each context can have its own category rules and automation behavior.
Sound Categories
Organize Sound IDs into categories instead of managing everything as one large list.
Included categories:
- Interface

- Mounts / Pets
- Professions
- Custom
Each category can be enabled or disabled globally and separately for each context.
Competitive Audio
Competitive Audio reverses the normal muting logic.
Instead of deciding what should be muted, MidnightMuter can mute the managed sound set and only allow the sounds you consider important.
This is especially useful for:
- Arena
- Battlegrounds
- PvP-focused setups
- Reducing unnecessary combat noise
- Keeping important audio cues easier to hear
You control the allowlist yourself.
MidnightMuter does not disable WoW's entire sound system and does not pretend to bypass Blizzard's audio restrictions. Competitive Audio operates only on Sound IDs managed by MidnightMuter.

Built-in Competitive Audio presets include:

You can also save your own Competitive Audio allowlist as a custom preset.
Presets build from your verified and managed Sound IDs instead of relying on guessed sound data.

MidnightMuter can automatically switch audio strategy when your activity changes.

Sound Library
The Sound Library provides a searchable view of:
- MidnightMuter built-in sound records
- Your managed Sound IDs
- Competitive Audio allowlist IDs
- Verified Database entries
Search by:
- Name
- Sound ID
- Category
- Source
You can also preview, manage, unmanage, allow, and remove sounds directly from the interface.
Sound Inspector
The Sound Inspector provides a safe workflow for testing candidate WoW FileDataIDs.
You can:
- Enter a candidate Sound ID
- Add identification notes
- Preview the sound
- Manage it
- Add it to Competitive Audio
- Promote it into the Verified Database
World of Warcraft does not provide addons with a reliable global history of every sound being played, so MidnightMuter does not claim to automatically identify every sound in the game.
The Inspector is designed around manual, reliable verification.
Verified Sound Database
Once you identify a sound, it can be saved permanently in your profile as a verified record.
Verified sounds can contain:
- Sound ID / FileDataID
- Custom name
- Category
- Notes
- Verified status
Verified entries automatically appear in the Sound Library.
MidnightMuter deliberately avoids filling the addon with guessed or unreliable FileDataIDs.

Full profile support is included.

Midnight Suite Integration
MidnightMuter uses the same modern visual direction as the rest of the Midnight Addon Suite.
When MidnightShared is installed, MidnightMuter can follow the shared suite theme.
When MidnightShared is not installed, MidnightMuter works completely standalone.

Recovery Tools
Temporarily Unmute All
Immediately releases every sound currently muted by MidnightMuter.
A confirmation popup is shown before anything happens.
Your saved Sound IDs, profiles, presets and settings are not deleted.
Resume Configured Muting
Restores the current profile's normal MidnightMuter rules.
Performance & WoW 12.1 Safety
MidnightMuter is designed to stay lightweight.
It does not use:
- Continuous
OnUpdatesound scanning - Protected frame manipulation
- Secret-value inspection
- Combat-log scanning for audio
- Frame-by-frame polling
Sound state is recalculated only when relevant settings, profiles or contexts change.

MidnightMuter does not attempt to ship thousands of unverified Blizzard Sound IDs.
